BERL Awards focus on Māori participation

Congratulations to Gina McGrath, Customer Service Lead at Central Hawke's Bay District Council, and Kitea Tipuna, Economic Development and Engagement Manager at Wairoa District Council, recipients of the BERL 2018 Taituarā Summit Awards.

Award recipients were required to outline how Māori can participate in and contribute to the development of the community.

Kitea Tipuna, who has an interest in Māori engagement and community development, said the Award is a surprise, and really validating, "It is important that a uniquely tangata whenua perspective is at the heart of any discussion or process of community development."

Gina McGrath said that attending the Summit will help her to further explore ways that her council can engage with the community, "Council has an important role, particularly in a small community, to champion change and understanding on how to support the use of te reo Māori."

Thank you to Ganesh Nana and the team at BERL, and congratulations Gina and Kitea. We look forward to seeing you at Summit.
