As we continue to mourn all over NZ, shocked by the terrorist attack on Muslim mosques in Christchurch last week we will be experiencing a range of emotions. While we struggle to understand how this could happen in our place, we realise that our work in local government puts us closer to the face of our communities than most. Reflect on the importance and privilege of our roles, to serve our communities, by providing infrastructure, regulation and services that enable people to live their lives. But infrastructure, regulation and services are hollow without the people it is provided for.

Going about our daily lives in the belief that we will be safe to do so, gives us pause to reflect on why the Muslim congregations of Christchurch were not safe on Friday. For the good of our communities, and for all of us within them we, the local government professionals of New Zealand must deepen our understanding and sharpen our practice in building community cohesion and valuing our diversity. We must all be safe or none of us are safe.

He aha te mea nui o tea o? He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata

Assalaamu Alaikum

Kia kaha Christchurch
