Is your council doing exceptional work or an innovative project?

Applications are now open for the 2019 McGredy Winder SOLGM Local Government Excellence Awards® with six Award categories celebrating the very best in professional excellence in local government management.

Last year Environment Canterbury, on behalf of the North Canterbury Council Infrastructure Alliance, took out the BERL Collaborative Government Action Award for the Kaikōura Harbour Remediation Project, a project to restore and improve Kaikōura’s South Harbour, which lifted by a metre following the 2016 earthquake.

The project was described by the judges as being critical to the future of the Kaikōura community, and a good example of a project transitioning from regional to local control.

What benefits has your community achieved through your council working with other local or central government agencies? Why not consider submitting an entry for our Collaborative Government Action Award category?

Communication and Engagement Forum

We had a great time at the Communication and Engagement Forum on Monday and Tuesday. It was great to see so many councils thinking outside the square with how they engage with their communities.

One of the presentations was from Matthew McCambridge and Ana Mules from Far North District Council who presented on Nga Kūri Auau O Kaikōhe - a campaign to encourage responsible dog ownership by offering free neutering and microchipping. The tagline of this highly successful campaign, 'He's loyal to you so treat him like a King' resonated with their target demographic and is a great example of tailoring marketing and communications to be relevant to the communities we engage with. The Communication and Engagement Forum will be held in Christchurch next year - we hope to see you there next year.

Congratulations also to the winner of the 'SOLGM Comms team' who won the quiz at the Green Man on Tuesday!
