Chief Executives are required to make complex decisions, requiring them to learning quickly, weigh up advice and evidence, and often make trade-offs. We will be joined by Grant Symons from Transitions HQ and Professor Susan Krumdieck from the University of Canterbury who will facilitate a discussion on transitions thinking and what leaders need to do to understand the big picture, create alignment, and take their people on the journey. Grant and Susan will focus on decision-making around the Three Waters Reform Programme.

Professor, University of CanterburyProfessor, founder and director of the Advanced Energy and Material Systems Lab – Department of Mechanical Engineering, at University of Canterbury. Originally from Colorado in the USA, her research focuses on developing the engineering methods and innovative technologies for adaptation to reduced fossil fuel production and consumption. Having published more than 100 scientific papers and books her most recent is Transition Engineering – Building a Sustainable Future, released in November 2019.

Carl Blanchard

Partner, PwCCarl leads PwC’s infrastructure, real estate and capital activities in New Zealand.
Carl has worked extensively with boards and senior management teams. He has an excellent understanding of central and local government, with many of his (former) Treasury peers now occupying CEO and senior management positions within the Crown. His local government experience commenced at the Treasury, and continues to the present day, having provided advice to Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Hawkes Bay, Otago and Christchurch Councils. He has advised DIA previously.
His commercial experience spans 28 years including roles as the head of the Direct Investment team at ACC (with a mandate of investing in infrastructure) and also the Managing Director of investment banking at Jarden (formerly First NZ Capital). He started his career with six years at the Treasury.
Carl is Deputy Chair of the Takeovers Panel.
