
The New Zealand Post Group Local Government Excellence Awards celebrate and recognise local government projects that showcase best practices, innovation and excellence across local government in New Zealand. These are the only Awards that are solely for local government.
In 2008, SOLGM and New Zealand Post re-designed the Awards to celebrate the new ideas that span a wide range of subject matters in local government. Each year, there will be a set of categories for councils to choose are created which aims to:
The Awards are open to all city, district and regional councils in New Zealand, including their council-controlled organisation.
Supereme and Category Winners receive a cash prize and trophy which is usually awarded at the opening ceremony of the SOLGM Annual Conference (usually in September). But more than the prize, the winners gain satisfaction for being recognised by the sector for the work they do. Over the years, Councils that won noted increased morale of their staff and received publicity opportunities throughout the sector and the wider public.

Porirua City Council wins the Supreme Award for the 2009 New Zealand Post Group Local Government Excellence Awards for its Villages Planning Programme entered in the Council-Community Relationships Category.

The Supreme Award Winner for 2008 New Zealand Post Local Government Excellence Awards is Thames - Coromandel District Council for its Masterplan Consent Tracking Project.
There were 36 entries from 22 local authorities and with 39 local authorities involved across the projects entered.
The winner of the Overall New Zealand Post Management Excellence Awards was Waitakere City Council with their Waitakere Central Civic Centre project.
