2010 New Zealand Post Group Local Government Excellence Awards

Entries are now open for the 2010 New Zealand Post Group Local Government Excellence Awards.

The closing date for entries is 23 July 2010. The winners will be announced at the SOLGM Conference in Queenstown on 6 September 2010.

Joined Up Local Government

This award recognises projects that involve a local authority working together with one or more other agencies or organisations to advance a common goal. This category is seen as encompassing entries across a wide range of areas of local authority activity. This could include "shared services" arrangements with other local authorities or partnerships with government agencies or community organisations.

Improved Local Regulation

Local authorities have a wide variety of regulatory roles and responsibilities, and many different activities associated with these. These range from developing regulatory policy or strategy, through planning processes, consent processing, inspection, enforcement and compliance and monitoring activities. This award seeks to highlight local authority initiatives to improve their performance in undertaking their regulatory roles and responsibilities. A wide variety of projects might fall within this category – entries may relate to any area of regulatory responsibility, and to any type of regulatory activity. The defining factor is that their aim is to improve performance in one or more areas of local authority regulation.

Council-Community Relationships

How do you develop and maintain strong relationships with your community? This award recognises projects that demonstrate excellence, innovation or sector leadership in engaging with communities. This category covers a wide range of activities in your local authority and projects that have community engagement as a key aspect may enter.

Building Organisational Capability

Local authority managers are responsible for maintaining and enhancing the capabilities in their organisation. This award recognises innovation and sector leadership in building organisational capability which may include projects in human resources, technology, process or systems development or other relevant areas.
