The LGMA Management Challenge is an internationally acclaimed professional and team development programme that brings the best out of your present and potential local government leaders. The programme is for any local government employee. It provides participants insight into broad range of issues and situations encountered by local government on a daily basis and how to work together to resolve these issues.
SOLGM has been running the New Zealand leg of the LGMA Management Challenge since 2001 and has provided local authorities an opportunity to develop and grow managerial capabilities within their organisation.
LGMA have had a complete review and re-write of the challenge for 2010 and the University of Technology - Sydney Centre for Local Government have been contracted to develop the programme to concentrate more on leadership capabilities. There will be no Tavish City anymore and the teams are expected to use laptops and other electronic materials (but not access to the internet) to complete their tasks.
Gender Equity in the Pre-Challenge Task
In the pre-challenge task, teams will be asked to collect their council’s workforce data to determine gender balance (or absence of). They will then analyse and identify issues, barriers and challenges to women being in management position.
The data collection could include interviewing the Mayor and the CEO. This information will assist in developing their strategies to address any identified gender equity issues.
