SOLGM aims to influence policy development and implementation on major issues from an operational, managerial and technical perspective. SOLGM has been primarily been involved in the areas of planning, financial management, performance management, rating and local election management.
SOLGM is a management organisation and works closely with Local Government New Zealand to bring together governance and management perspectives and expertise on policies to ensure that the local government sector is well represented.
Together with our advocacy and policy development activity, SOLGM provides a range of resources and opportunities for Chief Executives, their managers and staff to build their capability so as to better assist councils to advance the sustainability of their communities.
SOLGM has four standing Working Parties who drive significant aspects of the SOLGM work programme. Each working party is comprised of a mix of local authority officers and representatives of key stakeholders, including government departments.
The SOLGM Working Parties are vehicles for identifying issues and articulating the perspectives of local government managers within their areas of focus.

SOLGM has developed and submitted reports to provide policy makers in central government the managerial perspective on key issues and policies that affect local government. Some of the reports are done jointly with Local Government New Zealand.
