Waitaki District Council's 'The Waitaki Express' wins The Great LTCCP Summary Competition presented at the SOLGM Community Plan Conference in Rotorua on 14 August 2009.
The judges commended 'The Waitaki Express' in its creativity -- both in layout and in the presentation of issues for consultation. The summary document's use of humour makes the casual reader want to keep on reading. The submission form is well designed and easy to use. The frequent use of photos of the future generation also serves as a neat reminder to the community on why we plan.
"The Waitaki Express sets a benchmark in the future for councils to consider how their LTCCP summary should be," said Raymond Horan, Senior Policy Advisor SOLGM.
Tauranga City Council's 'Your City Needs You' finished second. The judges considered it was a particularly high standard summary. This council has a particular financial issue and qualification over the LTCCP to deal with in its summary.
Tauranga's LTCCP summary places the issue front and centre and was able to successfully engage the community in the resolution of the issue. It is a good summary and an easy read.

In total, there were 51 entries which were pre-judged by a group of five strategic planners from different local authorities. Eleven entries moved on to the finals.
"The eleven finalists covered a range of sizes and types and it was pleasing to see a number of small local authorities represented in the final," said Raymond Horan.
The finalists were judged by 3 members of the SOLGM Strategic Planning Working Party, 1 member of the SOLGM Financial Management Working Party and an independent judge. The judges rewarded clarity, brevity, evidence of genuine willingness to engage and ‘eye-catchiness’ of the layout.
Thank you to all who have entered and most especially to all judges who took part in the process.
