Purpose of the Course?

Strategic Management is a 3.5-day intensive course specially customised for the local government sector. It is aimed at developing strategic management skills in local government.

The course provides an extensive grounding in the language and key concepts of strategic management, mixed with practical exercises, class discussion and syndicate work. The goal is to furnish attendees with a toolbox of practical skills. The course draws on literature discussing strategic management in the public sector, guidance documents currently in use in New Zealand and on candidates' experiences and critical reflections on current practice. In addition, an extensive reading resource will be supplied.

The course has been designed by SOLGM working in partnership with the Victoria University School of Government under their memorandum of understanding to build capability for local government staff. It should be regarded as a fundamental building block in developing a career pathway as a strategic manager or advisor in local government.

Participants have the option of attending the program for professional development alone but a further benefit of the course is that participants can have the option to receive academic credits from Victoria University if assessments are completed.

Who Should Attend the Course?

The course is intended for anyone working for a local authority who is:

  • Involved in a strategic management role and wants to enhance their knowledge
  • Looking to further their management qualifications
