Our Annual Summit is in Auckland this year, on 21 to 23 September. This is the once-a-year opportunity for local government professionals to join their colleagues from all round the country to discuss the current key issues in the sector. This year we'll be particularly focused on the wide ranging and important theme of Inspiring Leadership.

We've just had the Minister of Local Government, Hon Pesata Sam Lotu-Iiga accept our invitation to speak to delegates on the Friday, in the last session of the Summit. Another confirmed keynote speaker is humanitarian and author Rabia Siddique who will weave her own experiences into a stimulating presentation.

One of the highlights of last year's Summit - the interactive workshops are back in the programme. We have five of the six topics for these confirmed:

Thursday, 22 September, a choice of:

> Leadership in Business - Laurie Sharp, Head of Coaching and Development, ASB and Adrian Orr, Chief Executive of Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation

> Post-settlement working with Iwi - Judy Campbell, Chief Executive, Gisborne District Council

(third workshop to be confirmed)

Friday, 23 September, a choice of:

> Brain-based Leadership - Dr Norman Chorn, BrainLink Group Australia

> Infrastructure Leadership - Peter Higgs, President, Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia

> Ethics - Sue Bidrose, Chief Executive, Dunedin City Council

On Thursday afternoon the International Presentation and Panel Discussion will see our own President, Barbara McKerrow, along with representatives from SOLACE (UK), CAMA (Canada) and LG Professionals Australia, explore the following four questions:

> The relationship of local governments with senior levels of government in their respective country and the main services that they deliver.

> How local governments are funded (revenue sources) in comparison to senior levels of government.

> The top three key pressures that local governments have been experiencing over the last five years and why.

> The key pressures that local governments are likely to experience in the next five to ten years and what they have done (and will do) to address these demands.

And you won't want to miss our Summit Dinner. This year the theme is The Pacific Ring of Fire. Dress-up is optional, but encouraged (there is an Award up for grabs) and we'll have food stations serving the cuisine of countries from around the Pacific.
