Managing Performance Masterclass

Having Challenging Conversations

Trust is not a prerequisite for communication. It is a byproduct of communication. Yet council leaders are often confounded by the complex challenge of confronting performance problems, even when ignoring them stifles the development of high performance teams, strong relationships, productivity, and trust.

Managing performance constructively requires tangible skills and tools for having challenging conversations that actually solve performance problems, strengthen relationships and deepen trust. Only then does performance management become a stimulus for creative problem solving, increased innovation, and the inter-dependent functioning required in city, regional, and district councils.

Even with the best of intentions, many of us communicate automatically, often making blunders that take a toll on our professional and personal lives. The models presented in this Masterclass offer flexible guidelines with progressive steps that are easily learned, applied, and adapted in order to manage performance issues, develop and maintain strong, positive relationships and to actually create trust through conflict.

The presentation style of the Glasers is unique (see biography at bottom of page). Former actors as well as award winning researchers and university professors, the Glasers utilise their dramatic skills to recreate compelling performance management scenarios directly from the lives of council leaders. This course has evolved from three decades of their own published, field-tested research and introduces participants to concrete, tangible skills to:

  • DECODE the hidden world of non-verbal communication to understand what people are really saying.
  • TEACH people how their behavior is a problem without making them feel defensive.
  • CONVERT criticism from defensiveness and blame to insight and agreement.
  • RAISE difficult issues that simultaneously solve problems and strengthen relationships.
  • TRANSFORM the organization’s culture from avoidance to positive engagement.
  • CLARIFY perceptions before making assumptions.
  • CREATE trust through conflict.
