The passing of the Health and Safety Reform Bill creates a number of potential risks for local authorities as employers and has significant implications for personal liability when the new Health and Safety at Work Act comes into force on 4 April 2016. This training event will provide an opportunity to learn from each other, share best practice, debunk the myths, learn how to apply the real intent of the Act and share ideas on crafting a culture of Health and Safety that ensures your employees go home safe and healthy every day.

Healthy workplaces are a sign of good leadership. Providing a safe working environment is one of the most fundamental obligations in any workplace, yet the reforms are spreading fear and anxiety in terms of personal liability and obligation. This training event will provide a forum to discuss key issues facing councils through facilitated workshops and presentations by experts in the field. Participants will have the opportunity to share best practice and learn from each other.
Included in the programme:
- Worksafe New Zealand will debunk the myths around implementing the reforms;
- Francois Barton, Chief Executive, Business Leaders Health and Safety Forum, will discuss how you can demonstrate Health and Safety leadership without encountering excessive compliance and expense
- Simpson Grierson’s Health and Safety experts will facilitate the crucial conversations and debate around the real ‘Health and Safety Hotspots’ and other related issues that keep you awake at night!
The morning session is suitable for Elected Members, Chief Executives, Human Resource Managers and all other staff involved with health and safety. There will be two streams available in the afternoon session, one tailored to Elected Members and the other tailored for Chief Executives and staff.

John is a partner in the firm's employment law group. He specialises in industrial and employment law and health and safety.
John advises many of New Zealand's top companies on employment law issues. These include disciplinary and personal grievance hearings, collective bargaining, disputes between unions and employers, employment contracts and service agreements, termination packages, workplace-related stress and injuries, restrictive covenants, confidentiality, business reorganisations, redundancy programmes, mergers and acquisitions, and superannuation (including KiwiSaver). He also advises on consultancy, agency, and other atypical working arrangements.
John has advised major organisations on health and safety including acting in relation to investigations and prosecutions.
John regularly attends mediations. He frequently represents clients in the Employment Relations Authority and Employment Court.

John Tulloch

General Manager, Communications, WorkSafe New ZealandJohn Tulloch joined WorkSafe on establishment in 2013 bringing more than 20 years' experience in communications with roles in journalism, the business sector, central government and international NGOs.
John is heading the work being done to influence, educate and achieve behaviour change in New Zealand to help achieve the goal of a 25% reduction in workplace fatalities and serious harm incidents by 2020.
Prior to his role at WorkSafe, John was head of external communications at New Zealand Post, focussing on communicating changes to the Deed of Understanding and transformation of the postal network. John has also worked as a Press Secretary across the Foreign Affairs and Justice portfolios, and spent five years in India and Pakistan working for the Red Cross on major relief projects.
Samantha Turner

Partner, Simpson GriersonSamantha is a partner and she heads the employment group in Wellington. She has extensive experience in employment law and health and safety.
She provides advice on a wide range of employment issues, including bargaining, contract drafting, personal grievances, disputes, restraint-of trade-issues, disciplinary matters, human rights, privacy, accident compensation, health and safety, and the Holidays Act. She also provides strategic advice on restructurings and acquisitions. She has advised on a number of cases involving stress, bullying, and incompatibility.
Samantha's health and safety work includes all aspects of strategy and policy development and incident management.
Samantha acts for a number of our key clients in the public and private sectors, including national and international corporate clients, local government, district health boards, Crown entities, and government departments.
Terry Johnson

Terry joined Simpson Grierson in October 2015 to lead our health and safety advisory service.
Terry works with clients to develop and implement their health and safety strategies. This includes providing leadership and operational training and advising on governance and audit processes. His work complements the legal services that we provide in this area.
Terry has more 20 years' experience working with major organisations on their health and safety programmes. He has worked in leadership positions for Fonterra, Goodman Fielder, DuPont, NZ Post, Woolworths and APN.
Prior to joining Simpson Grierson, Terry worked at Fonterra where his roles included leading an operational safety team of over 55 professionals, and leading the team providing global health and safety framework and assurance processes.
Terry's experience includes working in Australia, New Zealand, USA, India and Singapore.
