Phase 2 of the Better Local Government Work Programme

30 July 2012

In addition to SOLGM’s submission on the Local Government Amendment Bill, we’ve not been idle around the group of inquiries that collectively make up Phase Two of the Better Local Government programme.

SOLGM intends to lodge a proactive piece of work on the planning, consultation, and decision-making requirements of Part Six of the Local Government Act.  This falls within the ambit of the Efficiency Taskforce.

Here are the three main SOLGM activities planned for phase 2 (link to more information at the bottom of the page):

  • Release discussion papers to the sector for consultation on key components of the Bill
  • Hold face-to-face consultation with the sector at the Efficiency Taskforce workshops
  • Present an update on SOLGM's work and from the Productivity Commission at the SOLGM Annual Conference
SOLGM will also work with Local Government New Zealand on the Productivity Commission’s inquiry into local regulation. As of this morning, the Government has not released Terms of Reference for the proposed Infrastructure “expert group” or the review of development contributions.  There is no indication when these might be available.
